Errata

A reader writes regarding the article "Care of the Normal Newborn" by Dr. Kendig in the July 1992 issue: In the section on early routine care, it is stated, "Erythromycin ophthalmic ointment and tetracycline ophthalmic ointment in single dose vials offer effective prophylaxis against both gonorrheal and chlamydial infections, and do not cause chemical conjunctivitis." Erythromycin and tetracycline ophthalmic ointments ane not effective prophylaxis against chlamydial infections. The Redbook 1991 edition, page 170, states: "Neonatal Chlamydial Conjunctivitis. The reccommended topical prophylaxis with silver nitrate, enythromycin, or tetracycline for all newborns for the prevention of gonococcal ophthalmia will not reliably prevent neonatal chlamydial conjunctivitis or extraocular infection." Dr. Kendig agrees.

We have been notified of two errors in the article on childhood asthma in the November issue. On page 409, column 1, "arterial samples will generally show mild hypoxemia and mild respiratory alkalosis (low pH, low Pco₂)..." should read..."(high pH, low Pco₂)"....In addition, in Table 4, under Dosage of Epinephrine, "0.01 mm³/kg" should read "0.01 cm³/kg."
